What Is Lipstick?

Back in the early 17th century, women used "raisins"—stiff, pigmented ointments made with black grape juice and cochineal extract—to color their lips. Interestingly, we still use the term "raisin" today to describe a lipstick stick.
Technically, lipstick consists of greasy, colored compositions that are molded from melted fats mixed with pigments. This mixture changes the color, shine, shape, or volume of the lips.
